Germany has been giving Vivo a hard time for the past few weeks, but the Chinese phone maker won’t let a dispute over a patent in another country slow it down. The brand, which is owned by BBK Electronics, showed off two new foldable gadgets this week: the X Fold 2 and the X Flip.
The X Fold 2 won’t be a huge improvement over the first one, but it will be a much-needed improvement. The phone will have a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC and an Adreno 740 GPU, which is a bit more powerful. Both models will have the same amount of storage and RAM, but the first model will have slightly faster storage thanks to UFS 4.0.
Its main screen is just over 8 inches and has a higher maximum brightness. All of the other key specs for the screen, like its 120Hz refresh rate, are the same as the first version.
Vivo made this new device about 1.5mm thinner and about 30 grams lighter, which makes it easier to hold than the first X Fold. Even though the body is smaller, the company was able to fit in a slightly bigger 4,800 maH battery with 120W fast wired charging and 50W wireless charging.
The main camera on the phone will have a 50MP sensor, and Zeiss will add a cinematic video mode that will let users film hard-to-capture shots at night without needing a stand to steady the device.
The X Flip, Vivo’s second phone, will be a clamshell folding phone like the Galaxy Z Flip models from Samsung. This device will, of course, be much smaller than the X Fold 2, and it will also have less power.
The folding phone will have the same Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC and GPU as the first X Fold. Even though it will have the same amount of storage and RAM as the X Fold 2, it will only use UFS 3.1.
The X Flip has a 6.74-inch screen with a refresh rate of 120Hz and a resolution of 1080 x 2520, which isn’t quite as high as the resolution of its foldable brother. Even though the screen isn’t the best, the 4,400 mAh battery should last you all day.
Its camera looks a lot like the one on the X Fold 2, but instead of a zoom lens, it has an ultrawide one. Vivo says that the X Flip will be able to fold 500,000 times, but lab studies don’t always match up with real-world results.
Both phones can be pre-ordered in China, and they should be ready on April 28. When they’ll start internationally is still up in the air. There isn’t going to be an official release in the US, but we should see a launch in the EU soon.
Vivo was one of the first companies to show off its lineup for this year when it showed off its new folding phones. If the leaks are any indication, Google’s reported Pixel Fold and Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 5 could make it hard for people to get into foldable phones.
