How to Delete an App Purchase from Your Apple or Google Account

How to Scrub an App Purchase From Your Apple or Google Account

When you buy or download an app on your phone, that seems to be a permanent record. You can easily delete the app from your phone, but you can always find it again in the App Store or Play Store. That is unless you delete the app from the list of apps you’ve bought on your iPhone or Android.

Apple and Google don’t make it clear how to remove apps you’ve already downloaded from your account history. This is because it makes more sense to make it easy to redownload apps you’ve already bought and downloaded. Remember when you couldn’t redownload something you bought on iTunes? It was a bad time.

Still, they are our accounts, and we should be able to delete whatever apps we want from our histories. If you’re sick of seeing the download symbol next to that terrible app you tried years ago on your iPhone, here’s how to get rid of it for good.

How to Delete an App Purchase on Your iPhone

To get rid of an app you bought with your Apple ID, open the App Store on your iPhone and tap your profile in the top right corner. If asked, tap “Purchased” and then “My Purchases.” Find the app you want to get rid of by searching or scrolling.

Then, swipe left on the app and tap “Hide” when it comes up. Once you do that, the app is no longer linked to what you’ve bought. The next time you see it in the App Store, you’ll be able to “Get” it or buy it instead of seeing the download symbol, which means you’ve already bought it.

How to Delete an App Purchase on Your Android

It’s not as clear which apps you bought or downloaded from the Play Store and then deleted: Free apps that aren’t already on your Android phone will have a “Install” button, even if you’ve already downloaded them.

To really clear your account’s history, you’ll need to open the Play Store, tap your profile, and then choose “Manage apps & device.” Click “Manage,” change the list from “Installed” to “Not installed” (if you’ve already removed the app), and then choose as many apps as you want to get rid of. Tap the trash can in the upper right corner, then tap “Remove” to confirm.
